Longview Lakers Region 16 Champs

The Longview Lakers are Region 16 Champions!!! We took care of business in the first game of the Champioship and won 15-9 in a slugfest. Shawn Egge was 5 for 5 with 3 HRs including a grand slam. We had several contributions throughout the series. Brock Chaffin hit .800 with a HR and 5 RBIs, Egge finished with 4 HR and 9 RBIs, Will Mulligan had 4 2Bs, Spiker Helms scored 5 runs and had 4 RBIs, Tyler Christophel hit .571 and had 6 RBI, Miles Shelton was 3 for 4, and Ryan Rohmiller had 4 hits and 3 RBI. Everyone who started had at least 1 RBI. Everyone who started hit over .300 except for one player. We were extremely good on offense scoring 35 runs in 3 games. Our bullpen only allowed one run in 3 games in 10 innings of work. Each of our starters gave us at least 5 innings. It was a total team effort. This moves us on to the next round which will be held at Longview starting this Friday. Here is the schedule:

Friday, May 21

9:00 am- Western Oklahoma vs. Longview

12:30 – Western Oklahoma vs Brown Mackie

4:00- Longview vs. Brown Mackie

Saturday, May 22 and Sunday May 23

Teams to be determined but only one game a day and it will start at 1:00.

This will be our last home stand so I hope people will have a chance to see us play. This is a really good group of kids and I believe we are exciting to watch. We will have our hands full with Western Oklahoma who is currently 50-5 and the number one rated NJCAA DII team in the country. If anyone can beat them, I believe our group can. I will catch up with you next week. Wish us luck.

Clint

Lakers Break Out Brooms in Season Opening Series

After having their first two weekend series canceled due to rain and snow, the Longview Lakers were finally able to start their season with a three game sweep of Redlands Community College.  On Thursday, February 18th Longview played an exciting 9-inning game that saw the Lakers come back in the top of the eighth to win 9-6.  Freshman Johnnie Johnson picked up the win for the Lakers in relief of starter Lee Stoppelman who went 5 innings allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, 5 strikeouts and no walks.  Johnson allowed one run in his first inning but settled down to pitch three scoreless innings down the stretch.  Down 6 to 4 in the eighth the Lakers scored five runs.  The inning was capped by a double by Arron Ray who scored Kyle Thornton to tie the game.  Ray then stole third and later scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.  Brock Chaffin singled home two more insurance runs later in the inning.

Friday saw the Lakers play a doubleheader.  Game one was a back and forth affair that saw four lead changes.  Longview scored first in the third inning and proceeded to score every inning after that inning.  The Lakers broke the game open in the fifth scoring four runs.  Starter Daniel Jones was able to keep Redlands scoreless in the fifth and reliever Colin Parker pitched a scoreless 2 and 2/3 innings to finish off the game.

The second game of the day was decided early as Longview scored eight runs in the first two innings.  Starter Paul Krogmeier pitched five innings for the win allowing only one unearned runs and limiting Redlands to just three hits.  Meanwhile the Lakers’ bats banged out 15 hits including three home runs by Will Mulligan, Kyle Simpson and Sam Campbell for a run-rule 13-1 victory.

Offensive stars of the weekend include Luke Ganzer who went 4 for 6 with two home runs and five RBIs.  Kyle Simpson went 8 for 13 with two doubles, 1 home run and five runs scored.  Spiker Helms was 6 for 12 with three doubles and three stolen bases.  Tyler Riddle stole four bases and the Lakers as a team stole sixteen bases in the series.  The Lakers only made two errors for the weekend which is very good considering that they haven’t seen a ground ball on grass since October.  The Lakers’ pitching staff only allowed seven earned runs for the series.

The Lakers will be in action next on Saturday, February 27th against Northern Oklahoma-Enid Community College.  The Lakers will play a doubleheader on Saturday and then a single nine inning game on Sunday.  The first home game is scheduled for March 2nd against Des Moines Area Community College weather permitting.

Play Ball!

The 2010 Longview Lakers baseball team will start their season this Friday in Mt. Pleasant, TX against Northeast Texas Community College.  The Lakers were suppose to start their season last week but were rained out in Dallas, TX.  Barring changes due to weather, the Lakers will play one game on Friday night, two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.  Inclement weather may push the games to two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lakers are extremely anxious to get this season underway after last season’s poor 15-36 record.  With an experienced bunch of returning players and a talented freshman group, the Lakers look to return back to their winning ways.  Lee Stoppelman anchors the pitching staff.  Lee has already signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Central Missouri next season.  He was a 1st Team All-Region 16 pitcher last season.  Offensively the Lakers will be led by another All-Region player in Spiker Helms.  Spiker was one of Longview’s top hitters last season.  Spiker has signed a letter of intent to play for Missouri State next season.

The Lakers will most likely play their first 13 games on the road before their home début on March 6th against Des Moines Area College.   Longview will play 15 home games in March so hopefully we will see you at one of our games.
